Still plugging away at small projects. This is 1 of 2 pillows made for the extra chairs at my old vintage table in the kitchen. The little house is paper pieced and the flying geese are a fun little piecing technique, I’m sure many already know. I choose to do my pillow in Moda’s new line Well Said by Sandy Gervais, one bundle in my shop. This was great fabric for home decor projects.
I hope you enjoy!
Here’s the paper pieced pattern home paper piecing 003
Cut out your paper, leaving a space around the pattern, you will trim up later.
Out of white fabric, I cut 2 3/4 inch by WOF
Gingham chimney fabric 2 1/2″ x 6″
Roof fabric 3 1/2 x 9″
House fabric 6″ x 9″ plus (2) 2 1/4″ x 9″ pieces. pay attention if you use a directional fabric like I did!
Window fabric 2 1/2″x 10″
2″ for tiny separations in white
I’m not going to teach paper piecing, If you need to learn I strongly recommend a paper piecing class at your local quilt shop or Craftsy. I cut my fabric up in smaller pieces to work with so it’s easier and less waste. That’s why I gave the measurements, you don’t have to cut the fabric before if you don’t want to. Paper Piece the house how your used to doing it!
I paper pieced each section first, then started sewing sections together.Pay attention to the “Y” seams at the roof lines, chimney lines and house front and peak. Usually in paper piecing I sew off the edges, I actually stopped at these Y seam points and back stitched.
All “Y” seams are started right at the point that they end, not at the beginning of a seam allowance. Go on You tube for how to do “Y” seams, I did a quick search and theres quite a few already there.
I know it’s hard to sew on the white sewing table but there is the paper piece house, I cut 1 1/2 ” border to put around the house, I did sides, trimmed and did top/bottom, trim and square.
To make the geese cut (2) 1 7/8″ x WOF and many 3 1/4″ squares in your print fabrics.
Cut your white strip further into squares 17/8″ x 1 7/8″ , then mark the diagonal. Lay 2 white squares on the print squares, right sides together and sew 1/4 inch away from your marked diagonal line, both sides.

Sew 2 sets of 5 flying geese and 2 sets of 6 flying geese, stacked on top of one another. Cut 2 1/2″ strips from your white, you will need 2 strips that are 2 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ strip and 2 that are 2 1/2″ x 10″, I trim and squares these measurements are a smidge big.
The shorter white goes to the stack of 5 geese, attach to top and bottom. Square and trim
The longer goes to the stack of 6 geese, attach to sides, square trim.
I added a decorative element of heat transfer vinyl in a matte navy in a swirly font. It’s featured on this pillow and a new matching pillow to this one. You can purchase both from my Etsy shop. Stay tuned for the matching pillow.
If you do a HTV decal attach it before quilting!
Make a quilt sandwich, I did some 1/4 quilting on the little house and tiny meandering on the rest.
I made my own binding and then finished the pillow with n envelope type back that I can just take out.
Stay tuned for the matching pillow and some other projects from this fat 8th bundle!
Thank you for stopping by, Colleen
